As a Chief Mate, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the vessel while overseeing various aspects of marine safety and crew management. Your responsibilities include:

Supervision of Crew:

  • Lead and supervise crew members, ensuring their adherence to safety protocols and operational procedures. Provide guidance and training to the crew on daily operations and emergency response protocols.

Vessel Safety and Compliance:


  • Ensure the vessel operates according to company-approved routes and complies with maritime regulations. Regularly inspect all areas of the vessel for unsafe conditions or operational hazards and take necessary corrective actions.

Equipment Management:

  • Oversee the proper use and maintenance of onboard equipment during daily operations and in emergency situations. Ensure all equipment is functioning properly and that the crew is trained in its use.

Emergency Drills and Training:


  • Conduct emergency drills in accordance with Transport Canada regulations to ensure that all crew members are prepared for various emergency scenarios. These drills may include fire drills, man-overboard procedures, and evacuation practices.

Accident Investigations:

  • Perform accident investigations when incidents occur aboard the vessel, documenting findings and taking corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. Prepare detailed reports on any accidents or near-misses.

Safety and Comfort Announcements:


  • Make announcements to the crew and passengers, providing important safety information and ensuring their comfort throughout the journey.

Daily Operations and Vessel Maintenance:

  • Ensure the vessel is well-maintained and clean at all times, overseeing maintenance tasks and ensuring they are completed according to the vessel’s operational needs.

Reporting and Documentation:


  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including vessel operations logs, maintenance reports, crew reports, and safety drills. Ensure that all necessary documentation is completed and submitted on time.

In this role, your leadership and attention to detail will be critical in ensuring both the safety of the vessel’s crew and passengers, as well as the overall functionality of the vessel. You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.



Qualifications

To qualify for the role of Chief Mate, you must possess a Certificate of Chief Mate, Limited for a Vessel of 60 Gross Tonnage or More. This certification is issued by the appropriate maritime regulatory authority and demonstrates that you have the necessary training, knowledge, and experience to effectively serve as the chief mate aboard a vessel of this size.
