Job Title: Senior Director, Architecture & Engineering
Reports to: Managing Director, Data & Technology
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
THE ROLE
We are looking for an accomplished and strategic Senior Director of Architecture & Engineering to lead our high-performing team of architects, developers, engineers, and technical analysts. This leadership role, reporting directly to the Managing Director, Data & Technology, is crucial in shaping the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of our technology platforms.
This position presents an exciting opportunity to influence and execute key technology strategies aligned with the organization’s long-term goals. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of strategic vision and hands-on execution, capable of strengthening our enterprise architecture practices, expanding development capabilities, and partnering closely with technology leadership.
This role is based in downtown Toronto and follows a hybrid work model, offering flexibility with two days in the office each week.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and inspire a diverse team of solution architects, business architects, developers, and technical analysts.
- Define and refine architectural frameworks, development practices, and the strategic direction for technology, ensuring clear communication to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Mentor and cultivate a culture of collaboration, ownership, and continuous improvement, leading by example.
- Collaborate with the Managing Director on the broader Data & Technology strategy and play a key role in developing compelling presentations for executive stakeholders.
- Partner with vendor management teams to provide strategic guidance, ensuring vendor engagements deliver business value and meet established expectations.
Architecture, Solution Design, and Enablement
- Govern enterprise architecture across cloud, application, and integration domains, ensuring alignment with business objectives and long-term vision.
- Maintain an architecture repository and oversee solution blueprints and technology standards, ensuring clarity, consistency, and effective communication across the organization.
- Ensure technology designs are scalable, secure, and production-ready, delivering value while addressing all critical constraints.
- Provide strategic guidance on technology platforms and architectural patterns.
- Oversee SDLC and DevOps practices, fostering agile delivery, automation, and a culture of quality and efficiency.
- Collaborate with the Director of Technology Enablement to drive platform readiness, service stability, and technical excellence.
Innovation & Governance
- Act as a key architectural voice in strategic planning and governance processes.
- Stay ahead of emerging technologies, evaluating opportunities for innovation and their fit within the organization’s strategic direction.
- Integrate cybersecurity, privacy, and resiliency into all technology design and execution.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Represent the technology vision to business leaders, building strong, collaborative relationships.
- Simplify complex technical concepts for diverse audiences, ensuring alignment between technology strategies and business goals.
- Provide regular updates to stakeholders on architectural maturity, progress, and capabilities.
- Collaborate with Project Management, Business Analysis, and other teams to ensure smooth delivery and alignment.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Extensive experience (10+ years) in progressively senior roles within technology divisions, with a strong focus on architecture and engineering leadership.
- Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, and driving results.
- Ability to articulate a long-term technical vision and strategy that aligns with broader business objectives.
- Strong understanding of architectural patterns, technology platforms, and modern development methodologies (e.g., Agile, DevOps).
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build effective relationships at all levels.
- Experience in regulated industries is highly desirable.
- A strategic mindset with the ability to balance long-term vision with practical implementation, contributing to the broader organizational strategy.
