Graduate Legal Counsel - Tech Sector at Canonical
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in enterprise initiatives across public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We have 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries with many roles remote or flexible. We are expanding our in-house legal team to hire a recent graduate as junior Legal Advisor or junior Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will work closely with the in-house legal team on a variety of transactional matters in technology and enterprise software, as well as contracts underpinning global employment, contracting and partnerships. The appointment focuses on ability and potential; a relevant degree is required, but extensive work experience is not mandatory. The role is home-based in Europe, the Middle East, Africa or the Americas, with the option of our London office.

Responsibilities
- Report to our global general counsel
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts with customers and vendors across multiple jurisdictions
- Provide legal support to internal clients, including Canonical's sales organization
- Interface with cross-functional teams to support company initiatives
- Utilize Canonical's contract management system to maintain accurate data for signed contracts
- Collaborate with local counsels in various countries to seek and implement advice
What we are looking for
- Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
- Law degree (JD or equivalent) and active license to practice law or current progress towards admission
- Drive, perseverance, and a willingness to go above and beyond
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills; able to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Passion for technology evidenced by personal initiatives and projects
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent drafting and presentation skills
- Confidence to speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas respectfully
- Appreciation of diversity; effective in a multicultural multinational organization
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
- Thoughtfulness and self-motivation; result-oriented with a drive to meet commitments
- Ability to travel up to two weeks per year for company events
Nice-to-have skills
- Experience in commercial transactions, intellectual property, or corporate law
- Leadership and the ability to influence others to embrace new ideas or practices
- Understanding of the open source software community and values
- Understanding of the technology industry (silicon, data centers, PCs, connected devices, software)
- In-house legal team and/or law firm experience
