Our client, a well-respected litigation firm located in downtown Toronto, is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Insurance Defence Legal Assistant to join their dynamic team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced legal assistant with a background in insurance defence to contribute to a busy and collaborative legal environment.
In this role, you will provide comprehensive administrative and legal support to lawyers and law clerks, assisting in the management of insurance defence files from intake to resolution. You will be responsible for drafting legal documents, coordinating schedules, managing documentation, and ensuring timely and accurate communication with clients, courts, and legal professionals.
Responsibilities:
- Draft, format, proofread, and prepare correspondence, pleadings, motion records, affidavits, mediation memos, and other legal documents
- File and serve court documents in accordance with Rules of Civil Procedure
- Schedule Examinations for Discovery, court appearances, mediations, and other key meetings
- Coordinate lawyers’ calendars and ensure all deadlines and appointments are tracked accurately
- Assist in the preparation of trial and arbitration materials
- Manage physical and electronic legal files throughout all stages of the litigation process
- Support docketing, billing, and preparation of cheque requisitions
- Maintain organized document management systems and ensure all documents are up to date
- Prepare reports by gathering and summarizing legal and financial data as required
- Use legal software effectively for case management and document preparation
- Open and close legal files in accordance with firm procedures
- Handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
- Provide additional administrative support as needed
Requirements:
- 3+ years of experience in Insurance Defence Litigation in a legal assistant or similar capacity
- Strong working knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and relevant court procedures
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal document management systems
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a collaborative team
- Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving skills, and a proactive attitude
- Ability to manage large volumes of documentation with professionalism and efficiency
- Completion of a Legal Assistant Diploma from a recognized institution
- Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality and professionalism
