Job Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager in Toronto, the Ocean Cargo Manager plays a strategic role in ensuring the overall success and growth of Ocean Cargo operations while contributing to the achievement of the companys goals. This individual is responsible for leading and managing the Ocean Department in Toronto, overseeing operations, developing business opportunities, and ensuring exceptional customer service. The Ocean Cargo Manager also provides leadership to the team, ensuring efficient operations and alignment with company policies and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Operation Process to enhance the efficiency, productivities, and service quality of the Ocean Cargo Department.
- Monitor department performance KPI, identify areas for improvement, and drive initiatives to achieve company objectives and Dept. Budget.
- Oversee the smooth and compliant execution of Ocean Cargo operations, including import/export.
- Drive process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Act as the escalation point for critical client issues, providing timely and effective solutions.
- Collaborate with the sales department to identify and pursue new business opportunities and maintain customer satisfaction.
- Manage vendor and carrier relationships, including negotiating pricing with shipping lines and carriers to optimize profitability.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and present financial reports related to the department’s performance, revenue, and profitability in timely manner. Monitor budget adherence and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Drive initiatives to achieve and exceed revenue and profit targets.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the Ocean Cargo team to achieve high performance and maintain operational excellence.
- Conduct regular training, performance evaluations, and feedback sessions to support employee growth.
- Determine team composition and recruitment needs to ensure adequate staffing levels and expertise.
- Ensure timely completion of administrative tasks, including time and attendance management, vacation planning, and payroll matters
- Various other duties as may be required
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of experience in ocean freight management or a similar leadership role.
- Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate.
- In-depth knowledge of international logistics, ocean freight operations, and regulatory requirements, solid understanding and hands-on experience with eManifest filing compliance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to negotiate with carriers and vendors to secure competitive pricing and favorable terms.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address operational challenges and drive continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in relevant logistics and freight management software. Hands-on experience with CargoWise is a strong asset.
- Ability to work overtime or afterhours when required.
Educations/Certifications
- University degree or other post-secondary education or equivalent combination of experience and education
- Professional certifications in logistics or supply chain management are an asset.
