About the Role
Reporting to the VP, Finance & Strategy, and working with the Director, Tax North America, the Senior Tax Manager will develop and oversee the Canadian indirect tax strategy. This role involves compliance, audits, and providing tax insights to support company initiatives. The ideal candidate is passionate about Canadian tax law, enjoys solving complex challenges, and can communicate tax concepts clearly.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance:
Prepare and submit GST/HST, QST, and Provincial Sales & Use Tax returns with supporting documents.
Manage indirect tax payments via third-party agents.
Handle provincial and city business tax preparations and payments.
Administer the Ontario First Nation’s Rebate program, including annual reports.
Prepare annual sales schedules for Canadian income tax reporting.
Review and approve reconciliations of Canadian general ledger tax accounts.
Respond to tax inquiries and resolve notices from customers and vendors.
Audit Management:
Manage Canadian indirect tax audits.
Develop audit timelines and negotiate testing methods.
Gather audit data and documents.
Analyze assessments and recommend actions.
Process Improvement, Training & Projects:
Implement process improvements for compliance.
Develop and deliver tax training and reference materials.
Coordinate with external tax consultants.
Participate in finance and tax initiatives.
Other Responsibilities:
Conduct tax research and provide guidance.
Handle additional duties and projects as needed.
Qualifications
8+ years in Canadian indirect tax, including audits, reconciliations, and research.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; CPA is an asset.
Experience with SAP, Vertex, or similar ERP and tax software.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication skills, bilingual in English and French required.
Proficiency in MS Excel and databases.
Experience in retail and from a recognized accounting firm is preferred.
